As a parent SUGAR scares me

I’m that boring parent that arrives at kids birthday parties and the hosts immediately start apologising for the sugar content of the snacks… yes that me.

It happens every single time I take my kids to a party.

I’m that parent that moans about the school tuckshop selling sweets, chocoloates, donuts and croissants at a rugby match on a Saturday morning.

Yes, I’m what may be termed as a boring parent, sucking the joy out of every sugar-filled experience. I seem to be sucking alot of joy out of every experience as sugar is everywhere.

My son has hot lunch at school and what started out as a promising experience seems to be taking a turn for the worst. I’m still to receive feedback to my mail questioning their choices however I’m sure they see my name appear in their inbox and think: “oh no, not that anti-sugar lady again”.

I’ve taught my kids how to read lables and they are able to calculate the sugar content in products. Turns out the tiny 250ml apple juice (the ‘healthy option’) they get on a Wednesday with hot lunch contains 8 teaspoons of added sugar.

You think I’m jokin? I’m not.

The World Health Organisation recommends no more than 3-4 teaspoons of added sugar so why is it okay for our kids to be pumped full of a substance which according to Gary Taubes (whom I highy respect and admire) is probably toxic?

Watch his brilliant talk below:

I’l leave you with this:

We don’t think twice about feeding our kids sugar-laden junk food yet would you feed it to your animals or plants as a treat?
